This is the park where Tom ran his final miles and we watched and some ran along with him...not me.
Family provided moral support and water. I was the head cheerleader.
There was even a victory lap provided by the grounds keeper. He finished at 1:45pm. He ran 50 miles in 9 hours 41 minutes.
It was 99 degrees. Sick.
After the run he iced his legs, rested a bit and then went to an Orem Owlz baseball game. The next day he was fine. Just another day.
He wants to try it again sometime in an official sponsered race because it was hard to carry supplies not to mention the boredom and loneliness. Seriously, I don't get it. He ran without an Ipod because he wanted to test his mental toughness and most races don't allow them.
He is amazing, disciplined, determined the yin to my yang. His training buddies call him a machine, a beast.
For my 50th I will be taking a trip to a spa.
In his own words...
"Started at the mouth of the Provo canyon, ran west up into Orem on the
main streets for about 8 miles. Headed north on 800 East in Orem to the
North Orem Soccer Park. Found water and a restroom at a nearby school,
a lifesaver. Ran the next twelve miles around the half mile loop of the
soccer park and the 3/4 mile loop at the school. At mile 20, with the
sun just starting to come up over the mountains, I headed to the route
along the canal. This canal runs northwest from Orem out past American
Fork (had a nice view of the Mt Timpanogas Temple) for about 10 miles.
A nice dirt path right next to the canal the water sure looked tempting
as the heat increased). Ran to the end of the path where a fence stops
amid the hay fields and then turned around and headed back. Got back to
the park/school at mile 40. Finished the last 10 miles running around
the 1/2 mile loop pavement path at the soccer park (right next to the
Orem Cemetery, just in case). Family started to show up during last few
miles and some ran/walked with me and cheered me on. By the finish, had
about 50+ family members there and they made me a finish line tunnel to
run through. Cake and Ice cream was served. I felt pretty good, knees
and upper thighs were hurting a bit. Have felt more pain at a marathon
when running with much more effort"

Your husband DOES rock!! He ran along my old stomping grounds! I lived 2 blocks away from the canal he ran along and you can see the Timp Temple from the house I grew up in.
Truly amazing.
And CAH-RA-ZY!!
I can't believe he wasn't even sore after...
Tom IS an ironman.
Good for him, but I just don't get it either!
I'll join you at the spa.
So impressive.
I do like your idea of the spa for 50, though. Mine is coming up in 6months or so. Yes, the spa sounds like the thing to do...
wow. wow. wow. he truly is a beast! nice job tom!!
You guys are a great team! Tom is amazing, and so are you! Thanks for the nice visit tonight!
INCREDIBLE!!!!!
Why did I not realize this was just something he did on his own? I thought it WAS a race and I thought it was crazy then. Some people!
But seriously, I hope that Tom feels really strong and proud and you should too.
1. are his toes disgusting?
2. i can't even stand to DRIVE for nine hours.
3. i for sure do not even have ten people in my family, forget fifty. wow.
4. the man is lucky you tolerate his insanity.
Yeah, I so do not get the whole wanting to run 50 miles thing. I'm with you on the spa plan--sounds like MUCH more fun!
I can't believe he did that...wait yes I can he's Tom. Good luck next week!
I can't imagine running for nine hours. (I can imagine blogging for nine hours.) Are you going to show his running shoes on Shoesday?
That is so amazing. What an accomplishment.
I love the, "were not worthy" picture.
When he ran by the cemetary he said, "just in case"...did he mean just in case he croaked? ;)
Seriously, amazing!
1. Are you joining him in Santa Rosa?
2. Convenient that they had a cemetary along the route. That's where you'd find me after mile 30. Make that mile 3. Or maybe mile .3.
3. I'm taking a nap for my 50th because that's what old ladies do.
I AM IN AWE!!! WOWZAA! That is incredible. Congratulations!
Oh my golly Tom! You are AMAZING!! Happy 50th!
Wow!! I can't remember what I did for my 50th.....Hmmmm, maybe I ran?? I don't think so! I can't believe you were in Utah the same day I was..had I known I would have stopped by and cheered!
